Areas of Study


The ability to process spoken-language effectively/efficiently is impacted by one’s hearing acuity, but other processes also engage. These include the intertwining of:

  • Central auditory nervous system pathways
  • Various cognitive aspects, such as attention, memory, and sequencing, heavily influenced by the central executive system
  • Language
  • Arousal level/ emotional state
  • Speech-reading

The goal of the Spoken-Language Processing Lab is to better understand the engagement of these various mechanisms in the successful processing of spoken language.

A number of central themes underlie this research. Some of these include examining:

  • The influence of acoustic parameters on spoken language perception (such as talker gender, types of competing stimuli, Signal-to-Competition ratio), both in individuals with hearing loss or suspected processing-related deficits
  • Various psychoacoustic variables, to establish which most closely associates with auditory processing speech deficits; in addition, these will be examined relative to their association with electrophysiological measures (such as speech ABR)
  • The derivation of a test battery to assess spoken-language capabilities in individuals with hearing loss
  • The impact of the acquisition of English as a second language on an individual’s ability to process English, relative to native English speakers
  • The benefits of speech-reading ability in spoken-language processing among individuals with normal hearing but identified spoken-language processing deficits.

The laboratory is directed by Larry Medwetsky, Ph.D. Projects will engage both internal/external collaborators, depending on areas of mutual interest and expertise, as well as student research assistants. A number of students have crafted their AuD projects based on their interests being compatible with the research conducted in this lab or who wished to work on one of the project concepts of interest to this researcher.
