Through our nationally accredited social work program, we empower students to embrace diversity by providing deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing students alike a quality education in social work. Graduates leave Gallaudet equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to work with individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities throughout the world.
High-quality internships ensure students develop into professionally licensed social workers at both the Bachelor’s and Master’s levels. Upon graduation, social work majors often move directly into careers in case management, child and youth services, community advocacy, substance abuse counseling, and vocational rehabilitation among many others.

Think you’ve got what it takes to be a part of a Gallaudet research project? Students can reach out to a member of the Social Work department’s experienced and diverse staff about becoming a research assistant. Not only is this an excellent opportunity for experience in the social work realm, but it is a great addition to any resume.
Signature Pedagogy refers to the fundamental practices one must undergo before entering a specific field. In the case of social work, the signature pedagogy manifests in the form of internships. Undergraduates in the BSW program must complete a single year-long internship during their senior year. Graduate students in the MSW must complete the same in addition to a second, semester-long internship.

The NASW is not only the largest organization of social workers but is dedicated to providing professional growth and networking opportunities for its members. Why is this important to students in our program? Because in the Social Work degree program, students get to become a member of NASW in their senior year. Helping to advance careers, protecting practices, and connecting with peers are just a few of the perks of being a part of NASW.
For over fifteen years, Gallaudet University has been a proud charter member of this national honor society. Our chapter (Mu Pi) recognizes students for academic excellence in addition to their contributions to their surrounding community. Mu Pi members are active members of the community with a focus on the needs of deaf and hard of hearing people.
