Recognizing Academic Achievement

Gallaudet University recognizes exemplary academic achievement by awarding merit scholarships each year to deaf and hard of hearing students — both first-time freshmen and transfer students — who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Scholarships are awarded based on a combination of high school or college GPA and ACT/SAT test scores. Higher GPAs and test scores will result in more prestigious scholarships. These scholarships vary in dollar amount, and are awarded for up to four years of study. You will automatically be considered for merit-based scholarships at the time of your admission. To be considered for the President’s Distinguished Honors Scholarship or the President’s Honors Scholarship, you must be admitted to Gallaudet University by May 15.The Provost’s Excellence, Dean’s Prestige, and Academic Recognition scholarships are awarded on a rolling basis. It is important that students secure their scholarship by confirming their intent to enroll at Gallaudet. All scholarships pay for tuition and fees and/or room and board (see individual award criteria). Gallaudet’s most prestigious merit awards for freshmen and new transfers are: President’s Distinguished Honors Scholarship: $10,000 annually added to the already-awarded Provost’s Excellence Scholarship if accepted into the Honors Program, for a total of $20,000 per year. Total value of Provost’s Excellence, with President’s Distinguished Honors, for four consecutive years is $80,000 (subject to change). President’s Honors Scholarship: $2,000 annually added to the already-awarded Provost’s Excellence Scholarship if accepted into the Honors Program, for a total of $12,000 per year. Total value of Provost’s Excellence, with President’s Honors, for four consecutive years is $48,000 (subject to change). These scholarships require application to, and acceptance into, the Honors Program. Final acceptance includes an interview, completion of summer readings. and participation in the fall retreat just before Undergraduate Student Orientation. Without Honors, the student is automatically awarded the Provost’s Excellence Scholarship. Our other merit scholarships are: Provost’s Excellence Scholarship: $10,000 annually; total value for four consecutive years is $40,000.
