Retired Physical Education Professor Jean Berube gave the Marina Ewald and Kurt Hahn Address at the Association for Experiential Education (AEE) International Conference on November 16 in Estes Park, Colorado.

According to AEE, the Address is “presented annually by a person who embodies the tenacity and conviction of Marina Ewald and Kurt Hahn, reflecting their commitment to the advancement of experiential education. [It] honors individuals who have made significant contributions to the field, demonstrating both leadership and global impact.”

Professor Berube taught at Gallaudet University for 45 years and is considered a trailblazer in experiential education. She created Gallaudet’s Personal Discovery program, which has served thousands of students and had an international impact. AEE summarized her legacy as encompassing “transformative educational practices, international peace-building efforts, and a deep commitment to personal discovery and cultural exchange.”

Current Discovery Program director Jesse Saunders, ’01, and recently-retired director Sarah Burton Doleac, ’82, attended the conference and Berube’s address. A sizable contingent of former students also attended to show their respect and admiration for her.
