Yiqiao Wang, ’09, just completed a new mural in the interior lobby of the Columbus Colony Housing 1 building in Westerville, Ohio. The mural showcases three of the original buildings of the old Ohio State School for the Deaf (featured in the middle and bottom sections) and the new school buildings of the Ohio School for the Deaf (positioned at the top). It also includes eight portraits of significant figures in Ohio Deaf history: James Flood, Edward Emmett Corbett, Albert Schory, Augustus Barney Greener, Robert Patterson, Robert MacGregor, John William Jones, and Edward Robert Abernathy.

Wang wrote in an Instagram post, “I am truly grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with the Ohio School for the Deaf Alumni Association on this mural project and deeply appreciate OSDAA’s trust in my art. It was an incredible experience to work together as a team and bring this mural to life!”

Wang, by day a creative designer at the Motion Light Lab (ML2), is a prolific artist and muralist who has earned national and international acclaim. Her work touches on many themes, including the vibrancy of American Sign Language, multiculturalism, and Asian-America Pacific Islander culture.

In addition to the new mural at Columbus Colony, Wang has an iconic mural at the Signing Starbucks on H Street Northeast. She also has art on public display in the NoMa District and on the northwest wall of Union Market, in the Maguire Welcome Center on the Gallaudet University campus, in another Starbucks store in Austin, Texas, and on the exterior of the Loon Building in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

In 2023, Wang designed a line of Starbucks drinkware. She has participated in numerous refereed exhibitions, and has had her work featured in publications devoted to the world of art and graphic design.
