Gallaudet has been in the news lately, and not just for Deaf U. President Cordano and undergraduate seniors Marlee Brambila and Sara Khan are quoted in a Today Show Online article about deaf people and the COVID-19 pandemic. Says President Cordano, “One of our primary tools of resilience is to come together in our shared signing community at cultural events and gatherings to support and re-energize each other. Gathering and basking in our social and language vibrancy is a critical part of the deaf experience. The pandemic has taken that away from all communities, including us for now.”

Senior Timel Benson appears in a New York Times article about college sports during the pandemic. Benson, who plays quarterback for the Bison football team, says of remote learning, “It’s a huge hit on me and my life. Everyone uses sign language, making [Gallaudet] a safe place for all of us…Just being around each other makes the biggest difference, not necessarily talking about football, but talking about life, talking about how each other is doing.”

Educational neuroscience doctoral student SaraBeth Sullivan and linguistics professor Julie Hochgesang are featured in an Apple Newsroom story about the Apple-Gallaudet collaboration. Sullivan, Hochgesang, and senior Elizabeth Martinez also appear in a Buzzfeed article about the Apple initiative.
