Celebrating Passage of Americans With Disabilities Act

Members of the Gallaudet University community will participate in celebrations this month for the 25th anniversary of the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a national declaration of equality.

Gallaudet has an historic link to the ADA. In 1988, the Deaf President Now (DPN) movement ushered in the first deaf president of the university and become synonymous with self-determination and empowerment for deaf and hard of hearing people everywhere. Many credit worldwide media attention on DPN for boosting action towards passage of the ADA; hearings began just weeks after the DPN protest. A little more than two years later, President George H.W. Bush signed the landmark ADA.

Members of campus will be involved in the Festival ADA: 25 Years of Disability Rights July 24-26. The Smithsonian, in partnership with the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and with support from the National Endowment for the Arts, is producing a range of activities to mark this historic moment and highlight the ADA’s on-going legacy in American life.
