Academics

In accordance with the Gallaudet University’s Residence Hall contract, all students who live on campus are required to purchase a Meal Plan. Occasionally, students living on campus may have a documented food-related medical condition that cannot be reasonable accommodated through the campus food service provider. Board Waiver’s are decided on a case-by-case basis. It is the responsibility of the student to provide Business and Support Services with a completed board waver form and supporting documentation for the board waiver.

Board Waiver Procedures

  • Students may request a board waiver based on a documented food-related medical condition.
  • Returning students should submit the form and related documentation to Campus Services at the end of the spring semester for the following academic year. New students must return this form no later than two (2) weeks prior to the start of the semester.
  • Documentation must include a physician’s letter stating that the student has a specific food-related medical condition and identifies the condition. This will assist the committee with determining if our food service program can accommodate the food-related medical condition.
  • A committee consisting of a representative from Campus Services, Food Service, and the Nutritionist will review each waiver.
  • A written decision from Campus Services will be forwarded to the student.
  • Students wishing to challenge a waiver denial may do so by communicating with Campus Services within five (5) business days.
  • The Executive Director of Campus Services will have the responsibility of making a final decision.
  • A board waiver is good for only one (1) academic year.
  • Campus Services will notify Residence Life of the approved board waiver and it is the student’s responsibility to contact Residence Life for kitchen access. The fee is $9.50 each week or $150 per semester. The approval of a board waiver does not guarantee kitchen privileges. Kitchen privileges are granted by Residence Life based on availability.
