Certification Program
DEDI is thrilled to announce a NEW certification program for people who have a passion for social justice and community engagement. These programs will involve two separate groups – one will be for students, and one will be for staff and faculty.
The IDEA Certification Program promotes a more inclusive and equitable environment within Gallaudet and Clerc Center. This program is designed to raise awareness, increase understanding, and provide tools and strategies for addressing issues related to Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility.
Here are some specific reasons why such a certification program is valuable:
Fostering Inclusive Environment
Reducing Discrimination and Bias
Improving Teaching and Learning
Enhancing Communication and Interpersonal Skills
Aligning with Institutional Values
Addressing Equity Gaps
Attracting and Retaining Talent
Meeting Legal and Accreditation Requirements
To obtain an IDEA Certificate, the participant is required to complete three consecutive semesters of work successfully.
Reading Reflection Club
Systemic Overview and Interpersonal Dialogue (Skill Development)
Application and Action Plan
Please apply! Our application is available on DEDI’s website! Remember, apply for the program that fits you. We have one for students and the other is for faculty and staff.
As a part of the Equity and Belonging Strategic Action Plan, the Division of Equity, Diversity and Inclusive Excellence (DEDI) created the Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility Certification Program for people who have a passion for social justice and community engagement. This program is offered to two separate groups. One will be dedicated to faculty and staff, while the other will work with students.
The IDEA Certification Program is designed to provide individuals with an overview of oppressive practices, an opportunity for self reflection, and the ability to apply diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) principles to an issue of their choice.
Here are some of the projected benefits from the IDEA program:
To obtain an Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility Certificate, the participant is required to complete three consecutive semesters of work successfully.
Participants will be reading articles and books that talk about systems of oppression on global, institutional, and personal levels. There will be discussions and opportunities to reflect on what was learned.
Learning Outcomes:
L.O.1 – Participants will learn key terminology relevant to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging work.
L.O.2 – Participants will participate in respectful discussions about multiculturalism from different positionalities.
Schedule for Faculty and Staff
Participants will attend a variety of training opportunities to learn about the impact of oppressive systems on marginalized communities, unpack biases, acquire active listening skills and engage in difficult conversations. Facilitation skills, conflict management, and community engagement skills are also taught here.
L.O.3 – Participants will develop an understanding of the principles of inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility, enabling them to recognize and address barriers to inclusivity in various contexts.
L.O.4 – Participants will acquire effective communication and collaboration skills to engage with individuals from diverse backgrounds, fostering an inclusive and respectful environment.
L.O.5 – Participants will apply practical strategies and tools to promote accessibility, ensuring equitable opportunities and experiences for all individuals.
Participants will be doing the work of equity, diversity and inclusive excellence. DEDI staff will work with participants to engage in project–based work. For example, someone could be asked to help facilitate Bison Circles. Perhaps, a participant wants to influence policy change; that can become a project. Participants can perhaps create their own projects, subject to approval.
L.O.6 – Participants will identify an inequitable or exclusionary practice.
L.O.7 – Participants will assess potential effects of an inequitable or exclusionary practice.
L.O.8 – Participants will propose and carry out a change.
L.O.9 – Participants will measure the effects of their suggested change.
We are currently accepting applications for Spring 2024. The deadline is January 26, 2024. Please note that there are two separate cohorts, Students only and Staff and Faculty only. You’ll also notice the schedule is included in the application forms.
