Academics

Overview

As a part of the Equity and Belonging Strategic Action Plan, the Division of Equity, Diversity and Inclusive Excellence (DEDI) created the Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility Certification Program for people who have a passion for social justice and community engagement. This program is offered to two separate groups. One will be dedicated to faculty and staff, while the other will work with students.

Purpose

The IDEA Certification Program is designed to provide individuals with an overview of oppressive practices, an opportunity for self reflection, and the ability to apply diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) principles to an issue of their choice.

Here are some of the projected benefits from the IDEA program:

  1. Fosters an Inclusive Environment:  By fostering an inclusive environment, institutions can promote diversity of thought, improve collaboration, and enhance overall productivity. Inclusion means that all faculty, staff, and students will be valued and respected regardless of their background, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion, or other characteristics.
  2. Reduces Discrimination and Bias: Participants will engage in discussions and unpack unconscious biases and stereotypes, with the goal of reducing discrimination and creating a welcoming atmosphere for everyone.
  3. Improves Teaching and Learning: Inclusive classrooms and workplaces encourage diverse perspectives and experiences, leading to enriched learning and problem-solving environments. Faculty members who complete the IDEA certification program will be better equipped to support a diverse body of students and create inclusive teaching materials and methodologies.
  4. Enhances Communication and Interpersonal Skills: The IDEA certification program includes workshops and training sessions that focus on effective communication and cultural competency. These workshops encourage people to appreciate diverse viewpoints, engage in meaningful dialogue, and avoid potential misunderstandings or conflicts.
  5. Aligns with Institutional Values: Gallaudet, Clerc Center, and many other educational institutions have specific values and commitments to Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility.  A certification program ensures that faculty and staff are aligned with these principles and can actively contribute to the institution’s mission and goals.
  6. Addresses Equity Gaps: Participants can learn to identify and address systemic inequities within the institution. By understanding the unique challenges faced by marginalized groups, individuals can work towards creating a more equitable environment where everyone has an equal opportunity to succeed.
  7. Attracts and Retains Talent: Institutions that prioritize Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility are often more attractive to prospective faculty and staff. Furthermore, employees who feel valued and supported are more likely to stay with the institution long-term, reducing turnover and associated costs.
  8. Meeting Legal and Accreditation Requirements: Some institutions may have legal or accreditation obligations to ensure a diverse and inclusive environment. The IDEA certification programs can help meet these requirements and demonstrate a commitment to compliance.

To obtain an Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility Certificate, the participant is required to complete three consecutive semesters of work successfully.

First Semester: Reading Reflection Club

Participants will be reading articles and books that talk about systems of oppression on global, institutional, and personal levels. There will be discussions and opportunities to reflect on what was learned.

Learning Outcomes:

L.O.1 – Participants will learn key terminology relevant to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging work.

L.O.2 – Participants will participate in respectful discussions about multiculturalism from different positionalities.

Schedule for Faculty and Staff

Second Semester: Systematic Overview and Interpersonal Dialogue (Skill Development)

Participants will attend a variety of training opportunities to learn about the impact of oppressive systems on marginalized communities, unpack biases, acquire active listening skills and engage in difficult conversations. Facilitation skills, conflict management, and community engagement skills are also taught here.

Learning Outcomes:

L.O.3 – Participants will develop an understanding of the principles of inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility, enabling them to recognize and address barriers to inclusivity in various contexts.

L.O.4 – Participants will acquire effective communication and collaboration skills to engage with individuals from diverse backgrounds, fostering an inclusive and respectful environment.

L.O.5 – Participants will apply practical strategies and tools to promote accessibility, ensuring equitable opportunities and experiences for all individuals.

Third Semester: Application and Action Plan

Participants will be doing the work of equity, diversity and inclusive excellence. DEDI staff will work with participants to engage in projectbased work. For example, someone could be asked to help facilitate Bison Circles. Perhaps, a participant wants to influence policy change; that can become a project. Participants can perhaps create their own projects, subject to approval.

Learning Outcomes:

L.O.6 – Participants will identify an inequitable or exclusionary practice.

L.O.7 – Participants will assess potential effects of an inequitable or exclusionary practice.

L.O.8 – Participants will propose and carry out a change.

L.O.9 – Participants will measure the effects of their suggested change.
