Gertz, Mounty and Aina Deliver Major Workshop at NCORE

On Friday June 3, Dr. Genie Gertz, ’92, dean, College of Arts and Sciences; Dr. Judy Mounty, G-’03, research scientist, ODES; and Bunmi Aina, G-’96 director, ODES and Keeping the Promise (KTP), gave a two-part major workshop on Deaf Identity Development, Deaf Identity 101 (Introduction to D/deaf Experiences for Higher Education Professionals) and 102 (Intersectionality and D/deaf Experiences for Higher Education Professionals).

The Deaf Identity 101 workshop provided an introduction and overview for higher education professionals with little to no prior experience working with deaf and hard of hearing students and colleagues. Deaf Identity 102 explored intersectionality in the lives of deaf and hard of hearing students and professionals. The presenters drew on personal narratives and shared vignettes from students and colleagues at Gallaudet to explore the intricacy and complexity of intersectionality experienced by deaf and hard of hearing persons.

Both sessions were well attended, and there was a lively and thought-provoking interaction with the curious audience which was not shy to ask questions. Many expressed an interest in maintaining contact with the presenters.

Aina and Lozano Deliver Workshop at NCORE

On Thursday June 1, Aina led a concurrent workshop for advanced level learners, with program coordinator Delia Lozano, ’10. Their well-attended workshop, titled Anchoring Black and Latino/a Deaf Students in Academic Success, discussed how theoretical models were transferred into concrete practice in the successful implementation of a signature, voluntary participation retention program designed to serve the needs of Black and Latino/a Deaf students at Gallaudet University.

Aina and Lozano intend to share this workshop with the campus community during the 2016-17 (fall and spring) academic year.
