Biographical Sketch

Reuben Ireland Altizier was born in Roanoke, Virginia in 1908. In 1925, he graduated from the Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind. The same year, he was admitted to the preparatory class at Gallaudet College. Five years later, in 1930, he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He went on to work as a linotype operator at the University of Virginia print shop and the United States Government Printing Office. In the 1940’s, he started a monthly newspaper, The Silent Cavalier. In 1974, he retired. Ten years after retirement, in 1984, he died on January 17 at the age of 75.

Scope and Content

The Reuben Altizier collection consists of personal mementos dating from 1925-1980. The collection includes patches from the American Athletic Association of the Deaf, collection of manual alphabet cards from different countries, a certificate from the Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind. He wrote some articles about his trip to Russia and the deaf people he met there. Altizier also gave a speech about Deaf history. For many years, Altizier was involved with the Virginia Association of the Deaf and also served as president of the V.A.D. In Dr. Schuchman’s collection of videotapes, there is a tape about Altizier’s life, made in 1981.
