Biographical Sketch

1913 Born on January 28th, in New York City, New York.
1935 Received B.A. degree from Hunter College, New York City.
1937 Received M.A. degree from Columbia University, New York City.
1937-1949 Taught deaf children and counseled parents of deaf children in Cleveland, New York City, Washington, D.C., and London, England.
1951 Received M.S.W. from Catholic University, Washington, D.C.
1955-1956 Supervised of United States surplus commodity distribution for American Joint Distribution Committee in Belgrade, Yugoslavia.
1960-1961 Assistant Director for Jewish Social Service Agency, Washington, D.C.
1962-1969 Consultant to Peace Corps Volunteers on Community Development in Guatemala.
1970-1980 Joined Gallaudet’s faculty of the Sociology Department and was Associate Professor. In 1980 she was honored as Social Worker of the Year by the Metropolitan Washington Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers, and she retired in June 1980.
1970 Died on May 5, 2009 in Chevy Chase, Maryland.

Scope and Content

The Dorothy P. Polakoff Collection includes materials related to lip reading.

The collection dates from 1944 to 1950 and contains approximately 850 items.

The bulk of the collection includes books, clippings, lip reading lessons, and story exercises.

The folder of books entitled “Jane Walker’s Book of Lip Reading Practice Material” was written by Jane B. Walker in 1945 and used for lip reading classes. The remaining folders were also used in lip reading classes.

The collection is arranged alphabetically by subject.
