Organizational History It was an organization that was found by Rev. Dr. Thomas Gallaudet in 1872 and began in New York and Delaware then eventually spread out in the United States with trained missionaries. They were to “promote the temporal and spiritual welfare of adult deaf-mutes.” The organization created a home for the aged and infirm, extended help to the deaf, established a bureau to help understand deaf workers, and a church for all to attend. They believed that they reached 7,000 deaf-mutes annually. In 1974, the organization changed its name to Church Mission to Deaf People.
Scope and Content The Church Mission to Deaf-Mutes’ collection involves approximately 1,700 items. The majority of the papers include the organization’s financial statements, correspondence, and minutes of the meetings that took place mostly in the 1970s. Application for Admission and Certification of Incorporation of this organization is also included. There is information about the sale of the Gallaudet home in this collection.
