Historical Sketch
The American Annals of the Deaf is the oldest journal dealing with deafness and the education of deaf persons, published in 1847. The committee at the American School for the Deaf in Hartford formed the first publication, and the first editor was Luzerne Rae. The publication ceased in 1861 due to the Civil War, and it began to operate in 1868. Edward Allen Fay, a member of the faculty of Gallaudet University, was the editor who served for 50 years, from 1870 to 1920.
The Annals was the official organ of the Convention of American Instructors of the Deaf that published the proceedings and many of the papers presented at the conventions. The Annals has focused primarily on the education of deaf students and information for professionals who associated with the education of the deaf.

Scope and Content
The American Annals of the Deaf collection consists of letters, newsletters, financial statements, invoices, reports, and minutes of meetings. The collection, which consists of approximately 5,100 pages, dates from 1964 to 1986. The bulk of the collection consists of letters concerning the Annals’ publication and the history of the meetings, and where it was held. Included in the collection there was correspondence concerning on planned publication of Dr. Powrie Vaux Doctor’s biography written by Rev. Steve L. Mathis. However, it was never published. The largest subject in the collection is focused on captioned films and captioned television for the deaf. Some collection contains administrative papers of the Annals.
