ASL Degree programs
Learn from the University that introduced American Sign Language (ASL) to the world.
Studying ASL at Gallaudet? It’s a no-brainer. As the world’s first educational institution to identify ASL as a valid and independent language, you’ll experience first-hand what makes us the world leader in ASL education and research for the global deaf and hard of hearing community.
Prepare for a career in deaf education, linguistics, interpretation, sociology, or social work in our B.A. program. Or push yourself further in the theoretical and methodological aspects of ASL in our M.A. in Sign Language Education (MA-SLED) program.
Major in ASL
We are the world’s only university to offer both undergraduate and graduate degree programs in ASL-English Interpretation. Develop your skills in this high-demand field as you live and learn among deaf and hard of hearing people from around the world. Whether you’re interested in working in legal, medical, business, or educational settings, our programs will prepare you for success as a world-class interpreter.
B.A. in InterpretationM.A. and Ph.D. Interpretation Programs
Build your knowledge and linguistic skills by studying in our unique ASL/English learning environment. As an M.A. or Ph.D. student in Linguistics, you’ll conduct innovative, globally-impactful research alongside our seasoned faculty.
The M.A. in Linguistics program prepares you for work in language teaching, interpreter education, language planning, bilingual education, and language assessment, while the Ph.D. program introduces you to the wide range of theoretical and applied practices of ASL.
Master the basic elements of the language with a Certificate in ASL, or broaden your career capacity with training in various levels of Deaf Education on your own time, from the comfort of your home, or through hybrid-style classes.
