Here is a good reason to visit the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute once it reopens: to see Gally, the juvenile female American bison that we, the Gallaudet University community, named. She is about one-year-old and comes from the American Prairie Reserve in Montana. Previously, Gallaudet named one other bison at the zoo.

The Gallaudet Community named our “Gally,” which is the fond name of our mascot on campus and a nickname for Gallaudet University.
The Howard University community named their bison “Lucy,” in honor of Lucy Diggs Slowe, the first dean of women at Howard University.
