Paul Harrelson has taught in the Department of Interpretation and Translation since 2009 and has been a faculty member since 2013. Prior to joining the department he was a full time American Sign Language/English interpreter in private practice since 1993. He came to Gallaudet University originally to work at the Model Secondary School for the Deaf and while there discovered a love of theatre, volunteering and later working with the performing arts program in various capacities. Later he became Director of Quest Productions and Associate Producer of the Deaf Way II International Arts Festival.
He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, a Master’s Degree in Administration and Supervision from Gallaudet University, a Certificate in Sculpture and Ceramics from the Corcoran College of Art and Design, and is currently a doctoral candidate in Interpretation at Gallaudet University anticipating completing his dissertation in 2019. Nationally certified by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (CI/CT, 1996-2008 and NIC-A, 2009-present), he interprets in a wide variety of settings including legal, education, government, and business in both the United States and abroad.
