Student Health Service director honored
James L. Huang, M.D., director of the Peter J. Fine Student Health Service, has been named one of four recipients of the 2024 Early Achievement Award of the University of Vermont Larner College of Medicine.
Dr. Huang, a child of deaf adults who has a hearing loss himself, is a 2009 medical school graduate. He completed the Social and Family Medicine residency program at Montefiore Medical Center of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. He is also a Senior Atlantic Fellow, after completing the Atlantic Fellows for Health Equity year-long fellowship at George Washington University in 2018. He is board-certified in family medicine and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians.
Prior to becoming SHS director in January 2023, Dr. Huang worked at Unity Health Care in Washington, D.C. There, he started the Comprehensive Medical Care for Deaf Adults and Children Clinic (CODA Clinic), which focused on providing accessible healthcare to the deaf and hard of hearing community. He also led a family group visit program focused on healthy eating, physical activity, and prescribed fruits and vegetables through a produce prescription program at farmers’ markets. He continues to work with family medicine residents at Unity.
Dr. Huang provides high-quality, evidence-based care in a patient-centered manner. He is committed to working towards health equity for all, and has presented locally and nationally on a variety of topics from deaf health equity to Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV.
In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Huang serves as Vice President of the board of the Association of Medical Professionals with Hearing Loss (AMPHL), and as a member of the Commission on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion of the American Academy of Family Physicians. He is also a member of the District of Columbia Food Policy Council and co-chair of the Health and Nutrition working group.
