February 25, 1988 Gallaudet University The Board of Trustees 7th & Florida Avenue NE Washington, D.C. 20002
Dear Members of the Board: It has come to my attention that the Board of Trustees will soon be selecting a new president for Gallaudet University. Assuming the nominees for this position are of equal qualification, I would hope that you will seriously consider selecting one of the hearing impaired candidates to serve as president of your University.
It is unfortunate that, since its establishment, no hearing impaired person has yet been president of Gallaudet University. Perhaps it is time for a hearing impaired person to direct Gallaudet and serve as a role model for the students and the deaf community. I commend these individuals for aspiring to be president of a university highly recognized and lauded for its work with the hearing impaired community worldwide.
Thank you for your consideration and best wishes as you begin the selection process.
Sincerely, Bob Graham United States Senator
