January 27, 2014 Dr. Jane Norman Director and Curator Gallaudet University Museum 800 Florida Avenue, NE Washington, DC 20002
Dear Dr. Norman:
The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) submits its strongest affirmation of endorsement and support to the Gallaudet University Museum. A museum that details and preserves the rich history and heritage of Gallaudet University is critically necessary to demonstrate to the world the incredible contributions and innovations of deaf individuals who have been blessed to experience academic and scholarly learning on this campus.
In the sesquicentennial of the founding of Gallaudet University, a museum like this is only fitting especially to reflect the global impact of an institution dedicated to higher education of, by, and for deaf people. Deaf leaders throughout the world obtained their quality education and leadership skills here, and this museum is an ideal way of paying tribute to the elevation of an entire community.
The NAD owes much of its existence to those who were educated at Gallaudet, and will support the university and its new museum in every way. The history of this amazing university reflects the evolution of our community from a marginalized group to one of resolute self‐determination. It was on your grounds that American Sign Language was proven to be equal to any spoken language.
There is much to exhibit to tell a story that is 150 years in the making, and continuing. All of us look forward to visiting the museum and receiving invaluable insights into our past as lessons for us to fashion a powerful future.
Sincerely, Christopher D. Wagner, NAD President Howard A. Rosenblum, Chief Executive Officer
