Online Degree Program

Gallaudet University has made it possible for aspiring adult learners to finish their college degree online while continuing with their daily lives. If you have earned 45 college credits toward a B.A. or B.S. degree here at Gallaudet or at other institutions, you may apply to the Online Degree Program. We currently offer three areas of study for this program: Communication Studies, Deaf Studies, and Psychology.

The application requirements for the online degree program are:

  • Submit an online application
  • $50 application fee (waived if you submit by December 1, attend an Open House event or campus visit, or have ever participated in any of our Gallaudet University Youth Programs)
  • An essay (the essay question can be found in the online application)
  • A letter of recommendation from a former academic teacher who taught core subjects such as English, mathematics, or social studies
  • Unofficial high school and college transcripts*
  • Audiogram (hearing applicants are waived from this requirement)
  • Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) after October 1 if applicable.

*Official transcript(s) will be required following acceptance to the University. We accept both paper and electronic transcripts. If you have your transcript sent electronically, it should be sent to Contact here.

Transfer Credit Evaluation

Please visit the Transfer Credits website for more information about transferring your credits to Gallaudet, course equivalencies, and more. If you wish to contact our Transfer Specialist, please email Contact here.

Readmit/Program Change Applicants

To be eligible for a program change to the Online Degree Program, currently matriculated students or students seeking to be readmitted to Gallaudet must have earned at least 45 applicable credits towards a degree and have a GPA of at least 2.5.

Readmitted students with less than 45 credits or a GPA lower than 2.5 will need to attend classes as an undergraduate student on campus until eligibility for the online degree program is met, and at which time they may apply for a program change.

After a program change, students are able to declare a major or major designated as online degree program only. Students cannot declare a major or minor in non online degree program majors/minors.

Applying for Financial Aid

The financial aid process is separate from the process of applying for admission.

Complete the FAFSA as soon as possible after October 1. The priority filing date is June 1. Once we have your FAFSA on file, we will send you a Financial Aid award letter that provides detailed information about your eligible financial aid and your estimated remaining cost. You must complete the financial aid process even if you are also applying for Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) support. To see if you are eligible for VR, contact your state VR agency as early as your freshman year of high school.

Online Degree program applicants are not eligible for merit-based scholarships.
