In 2000, the Department of Business at Gallaudet University was awarded accreditation for its BS in Business Administration and BS in Accounting programs by the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP). ACBSP offers accreditation to business programs that demonstrate excellence in teaching. The accreditation for the two programs was reaffirmed in 2010 and 2019, respectively. In 2019, BS in Risk Management and Insurance (RMI), a new program, also received its initial accreditation.
Below presents information on the degree conferrals in the last five years by the ACBSP accredited programs.
Department of Business (DOB) is committed to student-centered learning and education excellence. We routinely assess our student learning outcomes (SLO) and program effectiveness using a systematic approach and multiple measures including standardized tests, such as Major Field Test (MFT) in Business, Peregrine Business Outbound Exam, alumni surveys, internship supervisor surveys, Gallaudet University Office of Institution Research (GUOIR) data, in addition to student class performance. Below charts highlight student learning outcomes and achievements as well as program effectiveness.
BS in Accounting, BS in Business Administration, and BS in RMI Programs 6-Year Graduation Rates have outperformed the national as well as the university statistics: (data source: GUOIR) According to National Center for Education Statistics, in 2019, the overall 6-year graduation rate for first-time, full-time undergraduate students was 63% (https://nces.ed.gov/fastfacts/display.asp?id=40), and 58% for Gallaudet University (https://collegescorecard.ed.gov/school/?131450-Gallaudet-University). The 5-Year average graduate rate is 84%, 84%, and 89%, for the Accounting, Business Administration, and RMI Programs, respectively. Both the yearly number and the 5-Yr average number outperformed the national and the university numbers in this measure.
Program Retention Rates have outperformed the national and the university numbers: (data source: GUOIR) According to National Center for Education Statistics, in fall 2020, full-time retention rate is 75.7% in postsecondary institutions (https://nces.ed.gov/ipeds/TrendGenerator/app/answer/7/32) and 73% for Gallaudet University (https://collegescorecard.ed.gov/school/?131450-Gallaudet-University). The 5-Year average retention rate to the university is 97%, 93%, and 95% for the Accounting, Business Administration, and RMI Programs, respectively. Again, these numbers are much better than the national and the university statistics, which reaffirm our exceptional program outcomes using this measure.
Programs 5-Year Enrollment Trend: (data source: GUOIR) The COVID-19 pandemics has negatively impacted our enrollment in recent years especially the BS in Business Administration Program. This is where we need to gear up our effort to improve going forward.
Employment Rate based on GU annual alumni survey: (data pending; will update the information when GUOIR provides the data)
Major Field Test (MFT) in Business (data source: ETS test reports) Despite of multiple SLO successes reported above, this is one learning outcome that DOB has tried very hard to improve over the years. The department has been actively seeking solutions including curriculum review, course revision, adding new courses, tutoring, labs, study table, and test prep class in our effort to help students retain knowledge acquired throughout their study in the Programs. Our data has finally trended up starting in spring 2020 as portrayed by the chart, and for the most recent two years, the mean scores of our graduating seniors have surpassed the target by a significant margin.
Peregrine Business Outbound Exam Comparative Data Between GU, ACBSP schools & programs and Region 2 (data source: Peregrine Academic Services test reports)
The embedded data comparison report and charts for year 2016-2021 show similar performance patterns by our students. Again, our data is trending up significantly since 2020 after successful implementation of a revised business core curriculum.
