Historical Sketch The Central Deaf Association was established in 1973 by Henry Johnson, the president of the San Diego Chapter of the California Association of the Deaf, at the request of city authorities. Johnson and a graduate student, Dean Santos, set out to establish a common link and head organization for the various agencies serving the Deaf in San Diego County. It was their mission to improve communication and cooperation amongst the various Deaf agencies as well as to fundraise, publish a newsletter, and improve public relations. In 1981, the Central Deaf Association changed its name to the Deaf Community Services of San Diego.
Scope and Content This collection contains the agency’s records, articles, by-laws, and several copies of their constitution, correspondence, minutes, newsletters, programs, and rehabilitation projects. Also included is a list of the advisory board. A history of CDA was written by Henry Johnson in 1984 and is included in the collection. Dean Santos’ original notes are of particular interest. The collection dates from 1973 to 1984, with the bulk dates being 1973-1975.
