How to transfer money to the United States?

Bank Transfer to Gallaudet University. You can request your bank to transfer your money to the United States in dollars. The money usually goes from your bank to a bank in New York City, and that bank transfers the money to Gallaudet. You should request that the money sent be payable to:

Gallaudet University
C/o your name and your Gallaudet ID number
Riggs National Bank of Washington
Account Number 14-08341555
ABA Number 054000030

Bank Draft Payable to You. This is the most convenient method for you, because you may open a bank account in Washington DC when you arrive. You may open a checking or savings account at a bank of your choice located near Gallaudet University.

Traveler’s Checks. You can bring your needed funds with you in the form of travelers checks, which can be cashed easily anywhere in the United States if they are in dollars. Do not bring large amounts of cash, and do not put money (in any form) in your luggage.

  • Some countries have strict currency regulations that will not allow you to take more than fixed amount of money out of the country without presenting a variety of documents. If you are in this situation, you should start the process early before you come to Gallaudet, so that you will not find yourself without money to register for classes.
  • You should bring with you (in the form of traveler’s checks) as much money as you possibly can and know what documents you will have to send to release additional money. You should obtain a bank receipt, letter from your sponsor, or some other evidence that money will be forthcoming soon.
