March 10, 1998 Mr. Greg Hlibok President, Student Body Government Students for a Deaf President Now
Alumni House Gallaudet University 800 Florida Ave., N.E. Washington, D.C. 20002
Dear Greg: I wanted to let you know that I support the students’ efforts seeking the ouster of Elisabeth Zinser as president of Gallaudet.
A fundamental requirement, overriding any other for this job, is an understanding of deafness — what it is and how it affects the educational experience.
I do not do this because I may get my name in the newspaper. I have made a commitment long ago to make Gallaudet University the center of international leadership for hearing-impaired individuals. I have written to the three Congressional members on the Board of Trustees urging them to exercise their influence to reverse the decision to appoint Zinser.
The students of Gallaudet have sent a powerful message across this country!
Best wishes.
Cordially, Paul Simon United States Senator
