The Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) is a web-based system for maintaining information on international students and exchange visitors in the United States. It is designed to keep the U.S. safe while facilitating the entry and exit process for foreign students seeking to study here. SEVIS is administered by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP), a division of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the largest investigative arm of the Department of Homeland Security.
SEVIS enables schools and program sponsors to transmit electronic information and event notifications via the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services and the Department of State websites throughout a student or exchange visitor’s stay in the United States. SEVIS allows printing of the appropriate forms and provides reminders, alerts, and other basic reporting capabilities.
