“Who dares to teach must never cease to learn.”
—J. Cotton Dana

Welcome to the Supervisor’s Salon. At first glance, “salon” may bring to mind fashion, hair, or nails, but in 19th century Paris, “salon” meant the gathering of notable people in the house of a preeminent person or family to discuss important issues of the day. Like this latter type of salon, this webpage is designed for supervisors of Gallaudet University’s Counseling Programs to gather, and explore and share information about counseling and supervision.

The faculty in the Counseling Programs hope you find this site helpful in keeping up-to-date on traditional and contemporary counseling and supervision issues. Please feel free to pull up your chair, grab a warm drink, and spend some time with us here.

Links to Important Supervision Resources

Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Education Related Programs (CACREP): Here you will find the 2009 CACREP Standards for counselor education programs. The School Counseling and Mental Health Counseling degree programs at Gallaudet University are accredited by CACREP. It is important for mental health professionals serving as supervisors to our students to familiarize themselves with these standards in order ensure our programs continue to strive toward excellence in counselor preparation.

American Counseling Association (ACA): This website is a useful resource for supervisors. Of particular note are the ACA Code of Ethics, current news about the counseling field (including legislative updates), the bookstore, and links to ACA divisions.

Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES) Ethical Guidelines for Counseling Supervisors: First developed in 1991, most of these guidelines have been incorporated into the 2005 ACA Code of Ethics, but are still a useful reference for supervisors.

National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC): The goal of most of our students is to obtain the National Certified Counselor credential. The NBCC website has information about this credential, as well as state licensure for counselors. Supervisors may find the “Graduate Student & Faculty” section of the site to be a valuable resource.

Center for Credentialing and Education (CCE): CCE is a separate entity from NBCC, yet was formed out of a need identified by NBCC for assistance with credentialing, management, and assessment services. Of particular interest to supervisors is the Approved Clinical Supervisor credential. While at this time the ACS credential is not required for supervisors working with our students, this credential attests to the educational background, knowledge, skills, and competencies of the approved clinical supervisor.

National Counselors for the Deaf Association (NCDA): NCDA is an organization of certified counselors, mental health therapists, psychologists, and related professionals working together to address the needs of deaf children all over the U.S.
