Gallaudet University Archives and Dyer Arts Center announce pop-up exhibit

In this unique collaboration between the two largest collections of deaf art in the world, the Gallaudet University Archives and the RIT/NTID Dyer Arts Center have come together to create an exhibit for our community to explore the relationships between deafness, the natural world, and the construction of personhood.

Featuring works by some of the best-known deaf artists of the 20th century, this pop-up exhibition aims to provoke thought on the tension between “natural” and “synthetic,” and about the power of identity. The Gallaudet University Archives’s contribution includes artists like Chuck Baird’s unique three-dimensional piece “Rose,” and Mary Thornley’s homage to fellow deaf artist Francisco Goya, “Milan, Italy, 1880.” 

Many of the works shared by the Archives have not been on public view in several decades, so this represents a rare opportunity!

Located at 4808 Rhode Island Ave, a storefront in downtown Hyattsville, MD, this pop-up exhibition is located right next to local deaf-owned brewery, Streetcar 82 Brewing Co, and runs from December 23, 2021 to January 15, 2022. The opening reception will be on Thursday, December 23 from 5-7pm, and we hope to have you join us there! 

The gallery hours are from Thursday to Saturday, open from noon to 5 p.m. ET. The gallery will be closed on December 25 and January 1, due to the holiday observances on both days.
