Overview

Introduction to the Grant:

Founded in 1968, the Laurent Clerc Cultural Fund supports projects that contribute to the advancement of arts and culture in the deaf community. This grant program is run by the Clerc Cultural Committee which is under the Gallaudet University Alumni Association. Due to other priorities, the grant program has been on hiatus since 2016. We are delighted to bring this program back with a newly designed application! Applications open on October 1. Deadline is March 1. Grant award recipients will be announced during Gallaudet’s Charter Day in April.

FAQ

You will receive 50% of the grant award upfront via direct deposit. The remaining funds

will be provided upon receipt of a status report indicating your work is at least halfway complete.

This program is open to those who are interested in contributing to the advancement of

arts and culture in the deaf community (includes DeafBlind, DeafDisabled, Hard of Hearing, and Late Deafened people).

Eligibility

This program is open to those who are interested in contributing to the advancement of arts and culture in the deaf community (includes DeafBlind, DeafDisabled, Hard of Hearing, and Late Deafened people).

Project Criteria:

Arts and Cultural Advancement projects can include but are not limited to the following:
  •  Artwork development
  • Writing project
  • Theatrical production
  • Deaf talent
  • Film production
  • Research

Grant Criteria

Grants may be used for:
  • Training/professional development
  • Publication costs
  • Editing
  • Publicity and marketing
  • Production costs
  • Direct project expenses (such as research or residency)
  • Supplies and materials (purchases that will assist for the completion or production of your work)
  • Documentation by photographer or videographer
  • Accessibility (such as interpreters, captions, etc.)
Grant awards may not be used for:
  • College or university tuition
  • Government-run programs and degree-granting institutions, religious services, fundraising efforts, or gifts
  • Political campaigns
  • Rent, bills, personal expenses
  • Space use
  • Wages, salaries, and fees
  • Recurring expenses
  • Personal Transportation
  • Insurance, licenses, permits
  • Purchase of equipment unrelated to art needs (such as software or food)
After you have been awarded the grant, you will receive the first half of your grant via direct deposit, then the second half after you have submitted a status report halfway through your project.

Please use this form when applying for the Laurent Clerc Cultural grant program. This program is open to those who are interested in contributing to the advancement of arts and culture in the deaf community (includes DeafBlind, DeafDisabled, Hard of Hearing, and Late Deafened
people). Examples of contributions include advancement and impact on the deaf community and/or American Sign Language through arts and culture. These contributions can include video projects, writing, research, all kinds of art, etc. Applicants who have a relationship with the deaf community or deaf culture are encouraged to apply.
