CAPS Training Program

Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) Training Program

CAPS at Gallaudet University offers training opportunities for master’s, doctoral, and post-doctoral students in social work, counseling, psychology, and psychiatry. Programs include practicum, externship, internship, and fellowship experiences.

Training Opportunities

  • Counseling: Master’s-level mental health counseling trainees develop skills in clinical evaluation, treatment planning, direct service, outreach, consultation, and culturally affirmative work with deaf and hard of hearing individuals.
  • Psychology: Includes clinical psychology externs, school psychology and clinical practicum students, pre-doctoral interns, and post-doctoral fellows.
  • Social Work: Master’s-level social work interns gain hands-on experience.
  • Other Trainees: CAPS also hosts psychiatric residents and medical students from partner institutions, including George Washington University and Howard University.

Program Highlights

  • Develop clinical and professional skills in culturally sensitive, multidisciplinary environments.
  • Gain expertise in ethical practices and collaboration across diverse mental health disciplines.

Clinical Skills

  • Be able to evaluate clients and produce an appropriate clinical diagnosis for treatment
  • Be able to develop an appropriate and directed treatment plan for clients
  • Be able to work in direct service provision to individuals and groups (and possibly couples and families)
  • Be able to provide psychological assessment services as appropriate to their level (applies to psychology trainees)
