National Symposium on Video Interpreting: The State of the Practice and Implications ~ Video Remote Interpreting

June 4-6, 2012

Purpose

The second National Symposium on Video Interpreting: Video Remote Interpreting will explore current practice in video remote interpreting (VRI), address where VRI is being done, and who’s doing it.

It will examine current practice, research, and implications for the field of interpreting by looking at applications in both signed-language interpreting and spoken-language interpreting.

Goals

  • To inform participants about the current practices within video remote interpreting
  • To inform participants about research being done within remote interpreting
  • To encourage the formation of a community of practice among video interpreters
  • To encourage research about aspects of video remote interpreting

Process and Format

The symposium will bring together consumers, practitioners, educators and researchers of video remote interpreting for stimulating presentations and discussions between members and presenters.

Pre-recorded presentations, delivered via a NING portal, allow participants to view the training from their individual computers. The presentations will then be opened for interactive discussion. Presenters will further facilitate the learning process through provision of articles or PowerPoints related to the topic, provide discussion questions, and moderate a discussion board to the topic.

Using the strength of a discussion based symposium, the third day will consist of facilitated participant-driven discussions composed of conference topics and themes.
