Requirements

  • A completed Graduate Admissions Application Form
  • A non-refundable application fee of $75
  • One letter of recommendation
  • Evidence of a bachelor’s degree in a related field as evidenced by submission of an official transcript from an accredited university.
  • A minimum 3.0 grade point average (on a four-point scale) in all previous undergraduate (and graduate, if applicable) study. Occasionally, applicants with a GPA lower than 3.0 may be admitted conditionally upon the recommendation of DEP leadership.
  • All international applicants from non-English speaking countries must demonstrate English language competence via the Degrees of Reading Power (DRP) examination. TOEFL results may be substituted instead of taking the DRP. (Use 5240 for the ETS institutional code)

Additional Program Requirements

  • A one page written essay and a video in American Sign Language (ASL) (3-5 minutes maximum) responding to the following three admission questions:
    1. What got you interested in deaf-centered disaster and emergency training?
    2. Based on your observations, what are some of the barriers that deaf people face with gaining access to disaster and emergency resources and decision-making power?
    3. What are your professional goals and how do you plan to use the knowledge and skills you develop in the DEP program?
  • Interview with DEP faculty.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in American Sign Language and English (via personal statement, ASL video, and interview).
  • Technology requirements and Computer Requirements/skills: A Mac or PC computer with access to the internet capable of running a most recent and updated web browser is necessary for participation in our online courses. The minimum operating system is Windows XP or higher for PC and MacOS 10.5 or higher for Mac. See Online Computer Requirements for more detailed information. Students are responsible for obtaining their own Internet access and are expected to have basic computer and internet literacy prior to the start of the course, including use of email, word processing programs, presentation programs (such as PowerPoint), and the internet to search for information.
