Course Overview

This 3-week course introduces visiting international students and current Gallaudet University students to the foundational concepts of Deaf Studies, namely its important role in documenting the history of Deaf people, analyzing the origins and evolution of sign languages, and recognizing unique aspects of culture such as resilience to audism and collectivism. In addition, an exploration of modern applications like Deaf Space and Deaf Gain will provide students with the theoretical and practical tools necessary to create a Deaf Studies curriculum tailored to their country’s context.

Completion of a Deaf Studies course or ASL 4 at Gallaudet in the last 12 months, or screening placement into ASL 5. Contact ASL Connect to schedule an ASL Screening. Permission of department; contact H-Dirksen Bauman with a CC to cce@gallaudet.edu
