Fulbright U.S. Student Opportunities

Fulbright grants for study or research abroad are awarded on a nationally competitive basis to U.S. citizens who are graduate students or will have earned the bachelor’s degree prior to September of the year for which the grant is being awarded. Over 150 countries worldwide participate in the Fulbright Program with teaching assistantships available in more than 25 countries. These grants generally provide funding for round-trip travel, maintenance for one academic year, health and accident coverage, and full or partial tuition. Though the competition is keen for a limited number of openings, this is a very attractive opportunity for students with a serious interest in advanced study or research overseas.

Country Placement

Fulbright is not limited to any particular country. Gallaudet has had students apply to Israel, China, Jamaica, France, and other countries. To find available awards by country or program, go to the link and click “Student Programs” at right.

Selection Process

Highly competitive, although statistically more difficult in some countries/regions due to popularity. See the U.S. Fulbright website for details. Applicants are expected to already have adequate formal training for their proposed study or research. In part, applicants are selected on the basis of academic and/or professional accomplishment, language preparation, feasibility of the proposed project, and personal qualifications. Other factors that may pertain to an individual’s acceptance are detailed on the Fulbright website.

Timeline

If you are thinking of applying for a Fulbright scholarship, the deadline for submission is mid-October, and a screening by the Gallaudet Fulbright committee is required in early October. The Gallaudet Fulbright committee needs a hard copy of your materials at the time of the screening. Now is the time to start planning your application, making contact with the country you are applying to and requesting your letters of recommendation. Information is available at Contact.

Application

1. All interested candidates must notify Dr. Charles Reilly Contact that they are applying.
2. Interested candidates develop an independent program proposal and secure an in-country affiliation.
3. Interested candidates apply to a specific country for a specific proposal. You may only apply to one country. Note that language requirements vary by country.
4. To get started with the Fulbright application process (you will need to set up an account), go to us.fulbrightonline.org.
5. Submit a hard copy of your application to Dr. Reilly. Include your transcripts, letters of recommendation, and a letter from the contact person in the country stating that he/she approves of your project and will sponsor you.
6. Interested candidates will be screened in October by a faculty committee at Gallaudet.
7. The faculty committee will then make its recommendations to Fulbright’s Institute of International Education and forward application materials to for Fulbright review.
8. Fulbright awardees will be notified in late spring.
