Student Location Policy

For licensure programs, the university must gather location information from students about where they are located at the time of initial enrollment in the licensure program. The US Department of Education has said that besides meeting licensure requirements in D.C., each program must also meet the licensure requirements for its program in every state where the student is located. More specifically, the program cannot be offered in a state if it doesn’t lead to licensure unless an attestation is collected from the student that acknowledges that they plan to work in a state where the program does lead to licensure.

Additionally, students are asked to answer where they will be located every semester. That information is stored as their term address. 

Institutional Effectiveness and Certification uses that location address for reporting purposes for state authorization and disclosures to students in licensure programs if necessary. For example, a disclosure will be sent if a student is in a face-to-face licensure program but takes an internship in a state where the program doesn’t lead to licensure. Direct disclosures must be sent to students within 14 days of informing the university that they’re in a state where the licensure program doesn’t lead to licensure. Students must inform the University of any address change within 30 days of moving.

Suppose a student is located in a state at the time of initial enrollment in a licensure program where the program doesn’t lead to licensure at that state. In that case, an attestation must be gathered from the student before the student enrolls. If an attestation isn’t gathered, the student cannot be enrolled in the licensure program. 

Relocating During the Course of a Program?

Prospective and current students should keep in mind that licensing and authorization requirements vary by each state and that relocating during the course of a program to another state could impact whether that student can continue in the program, meet the eligibility requirements of that state, and/or receive financial aid funding. If students are considering relocating, they should contact their program to check for authorization and licensure eligibility requirements.
