This Career Milestones storytelling series is partially funded by the American Association of Colleges and Universities (AAC&U). Gallaudet University’s Career Milestones, published in December 2022, were developed through our participation in the AAC&U Career-to-Curriculum Institute. These milestones provide a shared language across our community, guiding students through academic and career growth. Our office is committed to expanding these milestones across all undergraduate programs to ensure every student can thrive in their individual career journey.

By sharing success stories, we create models for faculty and employers to follow, empowering students to reach their goals. Storytelling is a vital part of our heritage, especially in the Deaf community. These stories celebrate achievements while inspiring others, showcasing how academic programs foster mentorship and growth.

Each story includes prompts to inspire others to replicate these successes. We invite faculty, students, and staff to explore new ways to support student success. Together, we’re building a future where every student can succeed.

Student & Faculty Spotlights

Zora’s Story:

“Deep caring opens doors.”

Zora Elliott-Mendelsohn: As an English major with minors in data science and writing, Zora understands the value of intertwining writing and data. Her academic journey has already been shaped by multiple internships, including collaborating with Dr. Kristen Harmon on a book project, working at Gallaudet Press on manuscript preparation, and interning at 58 Creativity, where she focused on copy editing and social media. Each experience has helped Zora gain a deeper understanding of her strengths in the workplace.

Zora credits Dr. Harmon for not only connecting her to these meaningful opportunities but also for challenging her writing and critical thinking skills. This level of faculty involvement and commitment to student growth has been empowering for Zora.

Catelina’s Story:

“Pushes Us to Think and Solve Problems”

As a sophomore majoring in IT, Catelina appreciates the challenging yet supportive teaching style of Professor Todd Bonheyo. Todd not only pushes her to reach her potential but also emphasizes hands-on problem-solving skills, often using group projects to help students tackle coding challenges together. His classes focus on core skills, like building code from scratch in Python—an essential skill for anyone aiming to thrive in tech. He also connected her with other faculty – Tayler Mayer and Mohammad Obiedat. Thanks to her faculty’s guidance and competency-building, Catelina feels well-prepared to pursue a successful IT career.

Estelina’s Story:

“She did not let me take the easy way out.”

We felt inspired after connecting with Estelina, a senior majoring in International Studies and Government. She has a promising future ahead of her and has plenty of kind words to share about her professors.

Pilar Pinar: A dedicated and inspiring faculty member, Pilar has been a steadfast presence in Estelina’s academic journey for the past four years. Known for her high expectations, Pilar motivates her students to reach their fullest potential, blending firmness with unwavering support. Whether helping Estelina secure an internship abroad or guiding her through challenging coursework, Pilar encourages growth beyond their comfort zone, instilling confidence and consistency.

Brendan Stern, PhD: As the catalyst for Estelina’s decision to major in government, Brendan fosters critical thinking and deep discussions. His classes are inclusive, engaging students in thought-provoking dialogue where every voice matters. Estelina appreciates his skill in challenging viewpoints and pushing students to articulate their ideas clearly.

Ciara’s Story: Christine Gannon & Abbi Simons: These dedicated public health faculty members have been pivotal in Ciara’s journey. Dr. Gannon goes above and beyond to connect students with job and internship opportunities, ensuring hands-on experience. She personalizes her approach, adapting to students’ interests and needs. Prof. Simons, meanwhile, brings a wealth of knowledge, guiding students to stay on track while providing support in and out of the classroom. Together, they’ve empowered Ciara by connecting her with influential mentors and meaningful projects.

Tye’s story: We had the pleasure of speaking with Tye Lovato, a senior majoring in Deaf Studies and Social Work, whose experiences at Gallaudet have been shaped by remarkable mentors and a deep commitment to advocacy. As a DeafBlind student, Tye has navigated unique challenges, but their journey is one of perseverance and success, thanks to the guidance of key figures in both departments.

Tye credits Tawny Holmes Hlibok, Esq. for inspiring them to think beyond the limitations imposed by their DeafBlind identity. “Tawny believed in me when others didn’t. She always encouraged me to think outside the box and find ways to overcome my challenges,” Tye shared. Tawny’s personal advocacy work, paired with her commitment to students, made a lasting impression on Tye. “She always had time for me, even for personal conversations over coffee. Her empathy and belief in her students’ ability to succeed really pushed me to reach my goals.”

A life-changing experience studying abroad in Singapore also helped solidify Tye’s path in social work, with Tawny championing Tye along the way. “Tawny made sure I understood that even though I face additional obstacles, I can still make a difference. Her work, her journey—it all influenced my own thinking and how I approach my work.”

Tye also found a mentor in Dr. Connie Pucci, a DeafBlind professor whose high expectations and strong support became a driving force in their academic life. “Dr. Pucci pushed me to think critically. Her influence helped me see how I could give back to the community.” Tye shared how Connie’s personal journey resonated with their own, both coming from immigrant families with shared values and experiences. “She showed me what’s possible—her PhD, her advocacy, her empathy. I look up to her so much.”

Both professors have played crucial roles in building Tye’s self-confidence. “Before, I wasn’t as sure of myself, especially in professional settings. But they both invested in me and pushed me to become a stronger advocate for DeafBlind individuals.” Whether it was during class discussions or internship experiences, Tye consistently received valuable feedback that helped them grow into a more assertive and empowered individual.

“They didn’t just teach me—they showed me how to thrive, to advocate, and to succeed, no matter the challenges I face.”

Thank you, Tye, for sharing your incredible story, and a heartfelt thank you to Tawny Holmes Hlibok, Esq. and Dr. Connie Pucci, for your unwavering dedication to your students’ success!

Leah’s story: We recently had the privilege of speaking with Leah Polk-Kaftan, a senior majoring in Art and Media Design with a minor in Education. Leah’s journey is one of passion, creativity, and self-discovery, shaped by her deep love for art and her evolving interest in education. “I’ve always been a hands-on, creative person,” Leah shared. She credits her professor, Michelle McAuliffe, for deepening her connection to art. “Whether it’s sculpting or digital media, she has this special way of interacting with me. When I need advice, I just tap her, and she’s there, ready to teach.” Leah also recently took on a new challenge—joining the field of education. Leah is especially grateful for Helen’s ability to see her true potential, both inside and outside the classroom. In class, Leah was shy about presenting, which made her appear more reserved. However, Helen noticed how different Leah was outside of class. Helen saw who Leah could truly be and continuously encouraged her, saying, “You can do this.” That belief and support helped Leah gain the confidence to broaden her career goals. As Leah prepares for graduation, she looks forward to combining her love for art and education. Her journey is a testament to the importance of recognizing the unique potential within every student. Thank you, Leah, for sharing your story, and a heartfelt thanks to Michelle McAuliffe and Helen Thumann for your unwavering support!

Keanu’s story: We thoroughly enjoyed getting to know Keanu Herzig Wilcox, who has a clear and focused vision for his future career. After conducting thorough research, he identified public health as his major, recognizing it as an essential pathway to achieving his lifelong goal of attending medical school. Keanu also identified Drs. Wooten and Lundberg as instrumental faculty members. Their guidance connected him with a professional affiliation (AMPHL – Association of Medical Professionals with Hearing Loss) and inspired him to establish a student organization on the Gallaudet campus for peers with similar ambitions in the healthcare industry! We were highly impressed with Keanu’s initiative and deeply appreciate the support and mentorship provided by Drs. Wooten and Lundberg, who serve as outstanding role models.

Jasmene’s story: We had a fascinating time learning about Jasmene Fuller’s personal journey. As a senior about to graduate with a degree in Social Work, Jasmene shared how she decided to return to Gallaudet after initially feeling “disconnected” during her first experience. This time around, her experience has been different Tersese Rognmo played a pivotal role in showing Jasmene that, even as a white woman, she understood the importance of representation in the helping profession. This was especially meaningful given the scarcity of Black, female, and Deaf social workers out there. Ms. Rognmo helped enhance Jasmene’s core Social Work competencies. Through hands-on experiences in her class, Jasmene and her peers role-played real-world scenarios, such as interacting with clients unfamiliar with interpreters. They practiced setting communication ground rules and discussed establishing boundaries. These exercises left Jasmene feeling much more confident and prepared for her internship at the Mayor’s Office for the Deaf, DeafBlind, and Hard of Hearing, MODDHH. Above all, Jasmene felt that Ms. Rognmo genuinely believed in her and was committed to seeing her succeed. Good luck, Jasmene Fuller, and thank you, Terese Rognmo, for all that you do!
