A new niche career fair focused on Science, Technology, Accessibility, Mathematics, and Public Health (STAMP) drew 118 people to HMB’s atrium earlier this month.

Anjali Desai-Margolin, ’87 & G-’92, Employer Relations Coordinator of the Office for Career Success (OCS), and Dr. Gaurav Arora, Associate Professor and Principal Investigator of the NSF-funded S-STEM program, collaborated to put on the fair. “The S-STEM program’s goal is to retain students in the fields of Science, Engineering, and Technology by providing career opportunities in these fields,” said Arora.

Dr. Daniel Lundberg, ’02, STAMP Director, and Dr. Roberto Sanchez, Dean of Academic and Career Success, welcomed guests. Data scientist Jesse Ragsdale delivered a presentation on how college students and job seekers can use AI effectively and on the influence of OpenAI and Large Language Models (LLMs) in machine learning.

Students and alumni could then explore numerous booths. Participating employers included the World Wildlife Fund, World Bank, Compass Group USA (Kellogg Conference Hotel), Philadelphia Insurance Companies, Prince George’s County Schools, Maryland Administration Insurance, CareFirst Blue Cross Blue Shield, Loggerhead Marinelife Center, and the United States Post Office.

Matthew Deudne, General Manager of the Kellogg Conference Hotel at Gallaudet, said that by participating in the career fair, he hopes to encourage Deaf people to work in hotels and other partner facilities. He also wants to provide Deaf students with learning and development opportunities, including internships in the hospitality industry. His goal is for the campus hotel to be more actively engaged and the community, to communicate effectively with Deaf individuals, and create more inclusive opportunities.

The World Wildlife Fund and the Loggerhead Marinelife Center conducted mock interviews for 15 students, who said receiving constructive feedback from employers was incredibly beneficial. Representatives from the University of Pittsburgh and three Gallaudet departments, Education Abroad, the Ph.D. Program in Educational Neuroscience (PEN), and the National Science Foundation Research Traineeship (NRT), were also recruiting at the fair to offer prospective students deeper training in STEM areas.

Gallaudet’s Office for Career Success is always ready to help students launch future careers.

Prospective students can explore generous funding opportunities in Gallaudet’s School of STAMP, from the undergraduate S-STEM program to graduate opportunities in neuroscience and Universal AI. S-STEM is supported by National Science Foundation Award#2130275.
