Disciplinary Sanctions 

Following are sanctions recognized by Gallaudet University; the Board or the Coordinator of Student Accountability may implement other sanctions instead of or in addition to those specified below: 

A. Restorative Actions– engaging in actions to restore the impact of a violation and repair the harms resulting from misconduct on other members of the community. These actions may include letters of apology, drafting and implementing a plan of resolution, engaging in restorative conversations, and developing plans for reintegration.

B. University Warning– a formal notice that the student’s actions violated a University policy, that such actions are not acceptable in our community, and that further misconduct, or any other violation of a University policy, may result in more impactful disciplinary action. Students are expected to reflect upon their decisions and to be mindful of how their future choices and actions may impact themselves, others, and the University community. 

C. Conduct Review– this indicates that a student’s behavior significant violation of university policy either because the student has had one significant incident or because the student is beginning to show a pattern of concerning behavior. Conduct Review is imposed for a specific period of time to encourage students to reflect upon their choices and behavior and to demonstrate the ability to abide by university policies and expectations. During this time, any policy violations committed during this period will likely result in a heightened level of response and more significant sanction(s). A conduct review does not place any formal restriction on a student’s privileges or activities, it may impact opportunities for which a student’s disciplinary record is considered as a criterion for participation. 

D. Disciplinary Probation– a status imposed for a specific period of time where students are asked to take active steps toward improving their decisions and behaviors and to demonstrate that they can abide by university policies and succeed as a member of the Gallaudet community. Disciplinary probation frequently will be accompanied by a loss of privileges as a student including the loss of privileges to participate in an event or activity. Examples include:

● Restriction on representing Gallaudet University in any official capacity; 
● Restriction from holding positions of leadership in any University recognized student group or organization or from being hired by University departments to serve in leadership roles;
● Restriction from attendance at University events or activities;
● Restriction on use of University resources;
● Restriction on entry or access to particular locations, premises, or events;
● Restriction on contact with another member or group of members of the University community;
● Restriction on one’s ability to study abroad; and
● Additional conditions as deemed appropriate by the Student Accountability Coordinators/Accountability Board. 

Disciplinary probation may impact other opportunities for which a student’s disciplinary record is considered as a criterion for participation. The terms imply that violation of any provision in the Student Code of Conduct would be viewed not only as a violation of the regulation itself, but also as a violation of the probation and would most likely result in more significant sanction(s). 

E. Discretionary Sanctions– work assignments, essays, educational projects, attendance at sexual assault, intimate relationship violence, and/or stalking awareness or related workshops or training, participation in online sexual assault modules, intimate relationship violence, and/or stalking awareness or related courses, service to Gallaudet University, prohibition from hosting an event including alcohol on- or off-campus, or other discretionary assignments.

F. Financial Restitution– monetary or material reimbursement/compensation required of students who have taken, misused, damaged, or destroyed University, public, or private property or services. Amounts charged to students may include the cost to repair, replace, recover, clean, or otherwise account for the property or services affected. G. Fines – punitive monetary costs intended to dissuade students from violating the Code of Conduct. Fines collected are used by the University to fund services and programs for students.

H. Restriction on Guest Privileges– A student’s privileges with respect to hosting guests in a residential facility may be restricted or revoked for a specified period of time. I. Restrictions on Contact – restrictions or prohibitions on a student’s student’s contact with another member of the University community.

J. Access Restriction– a prohibition from entering certain buildings or the residence halls for any reason. Failure to comply with the terms would result in the person being removed from the premises and being charged for violating this regulation.

K. Campus Access Restriction – a prohibition from entering campus premises and attending all University-sponsored activities on- and off-campus for any reason. Failure to comply with the terms would result in the person being removed from the premises by the Department of Public Safety and/or being charged in D.C. with criminal trespass.

L. Residence Hall Reassignment – relocation of a student to a different residence hall assignment. The new location and timeline for the move are determined in conjunction with Residence Life and Housing The sanction may include access restrictions to one or more residence halls. 

M. Residence Hall Suspension – separation of the student from the residence halls for a definite period of time after which the student may be eligible to return. Students suspended from the residence hall must comply with all University check-out procedures, including properly turning in keys and checking out of the hall by the date and time specified. All access to the residence halls may be terminated and students may not be able to enter into or visit any residence hall during the suspension period. Residence hall fees may be forfeited. Residence hall suspension is typically assigned for a minimum of the rest of the semester. In some cases a suspension may be effective on a specified date after the semester ends. As part of the sanction, suspension does not result in a prorated room refund according to University policy. Access restrictions to the residence halls may be imposed.

N. Residence Hall Expulsion – permanent removal of the student from the residence halls. Students removed from their residence hall must comply with all University check-out procedures, including properly turning in keys and checking out of their room. A ban from the residence halls will also be imposed.

O. University Suspension – removal of a person’s student status from the University including the prohibition from registering from classes, attending classes, remaining in university housing or other privileges typically granted to university students. In some cases a suspension may be effective on a specified date after the semester ends. The student may also have access restrictions imposed from entering campus premises and/or the residence halls, participating in any function or event sponsored by the University, including groups or organizations, or from entering, visiting or being present on university premises including for purpose of work. The suspension may also include the imposition of conditions for reenrollment. As part of the sanction, suspension does not result in a prorated room refund according to University policy.

P. Expulsion – a permanent removal of the student from Gallaudet University. A student who has been expelled may never apply to be a student, and their email will be deactivated. The sanction of expulsion includes the same conditions and limitations as defined under the University Suspension sanction. A prohibition from accessing University premises and working on campus may also be imposed.

Q. Other Reasonable Sanctions- Any reasonable sanction may be assigned that appropriately promotes the education and development of a student. 

Compliance with all assigned sanctions within the time allocated is mandatory. Failure to complete or comply with any assigned sanction, or failure to meet an assigned deadline (if applicable), may result in further disciplinary action, and/or the placement of a hold on a student’s University account. If a student withdraws or takes a leave from Gallaudet prior to the completion of their sanctions, they must complete all assigned sanctions before they will be able to re-enroll. Any of the following sanction types may be assigned.
