Eric Hidalgo. a second-year graduate student in the International Development Master of Arts (IDMA) program at Gallaudet University, is currently interning with a non-profit organization in Santiago, Chile. Eric was eager to share his experiences to highlight the amazing opportunities students can pursue abroad.

What is the focus of your internship, and what organization or company are you working with?

My internship involves collaborating with the coordinator of the En Señas Foundation at the Instituto de la Sordera (INDESOR) to develop various activities that support the organization’s sustainability.

These activities include applying for grants from different funding sources, such as the proposal submitted to the Organization of Ibero-American States for Education (OEI) to enhance early access for deaf children to sign language, supporting a digital fundraising campaign by recruiting foreign donors, and translating and interpreting materials for dissemination. Additionally, I work on creating databases categorized by donors, potential clients, and contacts of interest, developing a fundraising strategy, and organizing activities that increase the organization’s visibility internationally. This visibility aims to secure funding and establish collaboration agreements, conduct research, and provide support.

All of these efforts are directed at improving accessibility and promoting bilingual intercultural education for deaf students.

What are your main responsibilities in your internship?

My primary responsibility is to receive tasks from the coordinator and submit them on time before the deadline. Communication and mutual understanding are key to my internship’s success. I strive to maintain professionalism and efficiency in completing my assignments while collaborating with my team.

What has been the most exciting or rewarding part of your experience so far?

I would say that it has been understanding how international development teams collaborate in the real world, where I get to experience working on an actual project.

Have there been any challenges, and how have you adapted to them?

Yes, working with the team can present some challenges, as Chilean Sign Language (LSCh) and Spanish are the primary modes of communication. This can make communication difficult, since I rely more on a translation app, gestures, or International Sign. However, this challenge also allows me to practice and improve my LSCh and Spanish language skills.

How has your time in Chile shaped your perspective on your studies, career goals, or personal growth?

Working with INDESOR has been a valuable experience. I feel a real sense of contributing to projects with the team. This experience provides insight into choosing a career path, especially if you are passionate about working with people and advocating for their needs.

What has been the biggest cultural difference you’ve noticed?

Chilean culture is distinct from that of other Latin American countries I’ve visited, including Colombia, Panama, Ecuador, Peru, and Argentina. In Chile, people greet others warmly, often with handshakes, hugs, or kisses on the cheek, creating a genuine sense of welcome.

How has being a Deaf intern in Chile influenced your experience?

Being deaf significantly influenced my internship experience with INDESOR, making it easier for me to collaborate with educators, students, and others by providing accessibility through sign language as the primary mode of communication.

What do you hope to accomplish by the end of your internship?

I hope to build my confidence and gain a deeper understanding of working in the real world as an international development worker. I also aim to further enhance my skills in international development, which will enable me to contribute effectively to future projects in the field.

How do you think this experience will impact your future career or academic path?

It will help me develop skills in international development, including project management, communication, stakeholder engagement, and more. It will provide me with a deeper understanding of real-world challenges and strategies to make a difference in communities. This experience will enhance my studies by offering practical insights and a more solid foundation for my research and future projects with organizations in the field.

What advice would you give to other Gallaudet students considering an international internship?

My advice to these students is to clearly understand their goals when working with organizations in various intersectional fields, such as healthcare, education, migration, government, social services, human rights, environmental sustainability, disability advocacy, economic development, and more. Choose an area that sparks your motivation and enthusiasm, as this will drive your success within the team. Strong communication, trust, and loyalty are key to achieving your objectives in the organization.
