Good time management skills are essential to succeed in these highly interactive and learner-centered courses. Readings, assignments, and activities are posted online.
Students are required to log in to submit assignments electronically and participate in course discussions. Students must have Internet access and are expected to have basic computer and Internet literacy.
At Gallaudet, we use an online course shell called Blackboard to support our online courses. To participate you should first make sure you have the right equipment. See the section on computer requirements below to find out what you need to engage in our courses.
Students are expected to have basic computer and Internet literacy prior to the start of the course.
Computer Requirements
A Mac or PC computer with access to the Internet capable of running a most recent and updated web browser is necessary for participation in our online courses.
The following minimum hardware and software requirements are necessary in order to access an online class through Gallaudet University’s current version of Blackboard. Individual instructors may have additional requirements for specific classes. Be sure to check your course syllabus and discuss technology needs with your instructor as early in the class as possible.
Supported Browsers & Operating Systems
Using Blackboard’s Browser Checker, you can test your browser to determine if your web browser is compatible with the Gallaudet version of Blackboard Learn.
You can also learn what browser and operating system you need through Blackboard Browser Support.
Video Tools and Applications
Online courses include video assignments that require a webcam. The following are Gallaudet University’s most used video applications and tools.
Kaltura Media Management
The Kaltura Video Building Block for Blackboard enables teachers, students, and administrators to easily record, upload, manage, clip, transcode, publish, and deliver high-quality video content to any device. This building block easily adds video to your Blackboard environment, enabling video capture, video assignments, flipped classrooms, and other exciting video learning opportunities. See Kaltura Media Management for more information.
Echo 360 Personal Capture Software
This is a software application that can be installed on Windows 7, Windows 8 and Mac OS X 10.7 and above. This software application allows audio, webcam video, and screen sharing video. Screen sharing video captures the movements and activities on the computer. Click here for the instructions
