American Caregiver Association

An online, self-paced 4-week caregiver training in American Sign Language (ASL) to prepare students for the American Caregiver Association exam are offered through Gallaudet University’s Center for Continuing Education (CCE). Upon completion of the course and the exam, students will receive their caregiver certificate from the ACA. The National Caregiver Certification Course (NCCC) from Gallaudet University, in collaboration with the American Caregiver Association, is intended to provide relevant and useful information about the most common responsibilities and duties of caregiving. This course is designed specifically for Deaf caregivers and those providing caregiving services to Deaf senior citizens. A sample of topics covered include:

  • Patient’s Rights
  • The Aging Process
  • Preventing Abuse
  • Neglect and Exploitation
  • Controlling the Spread of Disease and Infection
  • Hygiene;
  • Documentation and Service Plans;
  • Nutrition
  • Medications
  • Social, Recreational and Rehabilitative Activities
  • Dementia & Alzheimer’s Disease
  • Managing Difficult Behavior

The information presented will be both in written English and ASL. The learning goals are

  1. To ensure that deaf and signing students understand the fundamental responsibilities of being a caregiver by preparing them for the National Caregiver Certification Exam.
  2. To provide deaf and signing students with the basic tools and information they need to be a successful caregiver.
  3. To provide Deaf-centric guidance and insight into the caregiver industry and the demands of being a deaf, signing caregiver.
  4. To ensure that students understand the core principles and values of the American Caregiver Association (ACA) in both written English and ASL.
