Common Questions

No, all Gallaudet Post Office services are currently outsourced. You can contact the current director if you have any questions.

All mail should be addressed in this format:

(FULL NAME)

Gallaudet University

800 Florida Ave NE #(mailbox number)

Washington, DC 20002-3695

Do not put the initials ‘P.O.’ before the box number. The initials ‘P.O.’ are only for United States Postal Service off-campus post office boxes.

A Gallaudet Post Office staff member picks up campus mail and packages at the USPS facility at approximately 10:00 a.m., Monday through Friday. All mail is sorted and distributed to student mailboxes by 4:00 p.m.

For packages, students will receive an automated email notification once their package has been scanned into our system and is ready for pick-up.

It is crucial that your full name and mailbox number are provided on all mail and packages to ensure a streamlined process.

During the summer months, all mail and packages are sorted accordingly. If you would like us to forward your mail for the summer, please send us an email and we will process your request for 30 days.

If you are leaving Gallaudet, you must supply your new address to your friends, family, bank, creditors, bills, healthcare professionals, Social Security Office, and to any other businesses or individuals with whom you have corresponded while at Gallaudet. It is also important to provide the Gallaudet Post Office your new address so mail can be forwarded to you for 30 days. Forwarded mail takes at least one week to arrive. At the conclusion of 30 days, all mail will be returned to the sender.

To avoid delays in forwarded mail and packages, you should be aware of the following concerning mail to be forwarded:

  • Update your new address as soon as possible with your financial records, heathcare professionals, auto insurances, and legal and offical documents.
  • Packages will be forward at your expense and tracking information will be provided via email.
  • You will be responsible for paying the postage due on forwarded magazines when they arrive at your new address.

Please note that Gallaudet University is a place of business, and forwarding addresses cannot be submitted via USPS online.

*Students that have a key box must return the key to the GU Post Office before leaving Gallaudet.

You should notify the Social Security Administration of your change of address. You may also leave several self-addressed, stamped envelopes with the Gallaudet Post Office, so your checks can be sent to you for a short while.

Services and Support

Yes, packages from all carriers that are properly addressed will go to the Gallaudet Post Office. Once the package arrives at the Post Office, it will be scanned into the mailroom system and an automated email notification will be sent to the student stating there is a package ready to be picked up.

You may leave a UPS package at the PO for pick-up. However, the package will not be scanned into the PO’s mail management system. Tracking information is only provided by UPS. We do not accept FedEx packages. There is a FedEx drop box in front of the Kellogg Conference Hotel. If the package is too large for the box, please contact FedEx via its website to arrange a pickup.
Once a student has registered for classes as a full-time or part-time student, they can be assigned a mailbox for the academic year. To receive a box and its combination, students should go to the Post Office in the Jordan Student Academic Center (JSAC) and show their current Gallaudet ID card.
