DSC recognizes that there are disability-related costs a student faces, above and beyond tuition, fees, room and board.

Students with disabilities often have to deal with additional expenses not incurred by other students. They may include the cost of specialized adaptive equipment, expenses for personal use (such as readers or attendant care providers), transportation costs necessary to pursue an academic program, and medical expenses relating directly to the student’s disabilities that are not covered by insurance.

DSC makes every effort to provide financial assistance to students who are able to demonstrate their need for additional help, in order to continue studying at Gallaudet University. Staff members at DSC work closely with other departments, external organizations, and state agencies to help students receive benefits they are eligible for.

The Newcombe Scholarship Foundation, a privately funded scholarship organization, provides financial assistance to deaf students with disabilities who qualify for funding. As a needs-based scholarship, Newcombe funds are awarded to eligible students each academic semester. Dependant on circumstances, students may receive up to $2,000 per semester.
