Bernard Bragg (September 27, 1928 – October 29, 2018) was a Deaf actor, mime, producer, director, playwright, artist, and author who is notable for being a founder of the Tony Award-winning National Theater of the Deaf (NTD) and for his contributions to Deaf performing culture. According to The New York Times, Bragg was “regarded by many as the leading professional deaf actor in the country,” who inspired future Deaf stars including the Oscar-winning actor Marlee Matlin. Bragg was the first Deaf actor to appear on television and nightclubs serving as an ambassador of American Sign Language that led to his signal achievement in founding the NTD. A 1952 graduate of Gallaudet College, Bragg’s pioneering work shone a bright light on his alma mater.
