The Mathematics Program provides students with critical thinking and problem-solving skills by teaching them mathematical and logical structures. These skills enhance students’ abilities to make logical decisions and qualify them for a variety of highly intellectual jobs.
The program offers exceptional opportunities to build strong analytical and quantitative skills in both theoretical and applied mathematics. Working alongside experienced faculty, students take part in research projects, internships, and advanced courses that prepare them for work in sectors such as engineering, education, and finance.
In addition to traditional mathematics courses such as calculus, algebra, analysis, and geometry, we offer a rich list of elective mathematics courses that include cryptography, chaos theory, and graph theory. The program offers a B.A., a B.S., and a minor in mathematics.

Students who are majoring in biology, chemistry, and mathematics can also work their way toward full licensure in teaching and working with students in grades 6-12.

Many of our mathematics majors and minors gain invaluable teaching experience by working as paid mathematics tutors at the Science, Technology, Accessibility, Mathematics, and Public Health (STAMP) Tutoring Center. The center provides on-campus and online walk-in tutoring services for all Gallaudet students. Tutors who work at the center develop excellent tutoring and teaching skills by working as in-class and out-of-class tutors. Mathematics tutoring is done in a friendly and supportive environment to help students succeed in their mathematics courses.
Summer internships are an opportunity for Mathematics majors to get professional work experience and experiment working in the various fields mathematicians are needed. Mathematics students are desirable candidates in the fields of business, engineering, and science. Institutions such as NASA/DC Space Grant Consortium, the National Science Foundation, the Beverly Taylor Sorenson Student Fellowship, and the Gordon H. and Dorothy M. Brown Fund for Environmental Science have collectively provided over 50 summer internship opportunities to our students directly through the Career Center and faculty connections.
