Antiracism, Inclusion and Multiculturalism

Gallaudet University is a unique place because the campus community is filled with people from all over the world, with unique life experiences, knowledge and ideas. Our students, staff, and faculty deserve to engage in a barrier-free, accessible and inclusive environment, and they deserve the opportunity to contribute to our campus in a meaningful way.

Antiracism, Inclusion and Multiculturalism (AIM) is a department within the division of Belonging & Engagement.  This department does the critical work of engaging with people all over the campus and building collaborative relationships with the goal of creating an inclusive campus and society; in short, to enhance engagement opportunities and thus, increase belonging. 

AIM consists of two units: Communications and Community Engagement and Community Alliances. These two units often work together, particularly with developing training programs and community events that are tailored to enhance belonging on campus.

What we do

• Research and data collection – community-driven data help us assess our work and its effectiveness. It also provides us with additional context for developing new programs or projects.

• Community engagement and alliances – 

  • • Build relationships – with individuals, organizations, departments and divisions on campus to create opportunities for collaborative work.

    • Communications – website, social media and outreach efforts, to engage with the community on and off campus.

    • Community events – on and off campus events where people can connect with each other while engaging in multicultural learning experiences.

• Community Conversations – Current events that impact our community need to be discussed, from a plurality of perspectives.

• Intercultural Development Inventory – measures intercultural competence and offers a way to plan further development and growth.

• IDEA Certification Program – a comprehensive program that teaches and provides opportunities to explore belonging and engagement through projects.
