• Transcript showing your most recent grades, if currently enrolled in a college/university.
• An admissions interview is required. Promising individuals will be invited to interview in February each year. (Exceptions: international students and those who qualify for early decision will be interviewed in mid-November.) The day will include activities such as Q&A sessions with current students, faculty, and staff, in addition to interviews and various assessments. Applicants should have a computer with a webcam, stable internet connection, and a relatively quiet and non-distracting environment for the interview day.

• A one-to-two page written personal statement describing why the applicant is pursuing graduate study in this program 
• A video (5 minutes or less) in ASL explaining what transformational leadership means to them

Additional Program Requirements

• Once your application is completed, you will be contacted by program faculty. An interview with faculty using American Sign Language (ASL) is the final step in applying for the program.
• Accepted students must achieve an ASLPI score of 2 or above to engage in field placement. Fluency in ASL is essential for applicants.
• Students are expected to have engaged in their own personal counseling, either in the past or while they are in the program.
• Applicants who have no experience in the mental health field are encouraged to volunteer at a mental health agency to gain early experience. Volunteering in roles which are both clinical and non-clinical are of value for applicants.

• A basic understanding of economics is necessary to complete coursework in Economic Development and Micropolitics. Therefore, students must have passed an introductory course in economics either prior to or during the first semester of study.
• The ability to communicate across cultures in more than one language is both a distinguishing and expected skill of the international development professional. To satisfy requirements for graduation, IDMA students are required to take one course in a Language Other Than ASL and English (LOTAE) or demonstrate that they took a course in a LOTEA some time in the five years prior to entering the IDMA.
• Interview with the International Development MA Program. After submitting a complete application, the program will contact you to arrange an interview (either face to face or via video-platform)
• Goals statement questions. 
  • What got you interested in the International Development field? Describe experience working in deaf development organizations, community-based organizations, social justice work, international experiences, or other experiences that led you to International Development.
  • The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals describe 17 areas of global issues that include things like access to quality education, employment, food, health, gender equity, disasters and climate change, and emphasize disability inclusion in each area
  • What areas are you interested in studying and working on in your career?In your academic, community, or professional experiences–describe a situation that required you to work with others to create a solution to a problem? What role did you take in creating that solution?
  • What kind of professional work do you envision for yourself after graduation? For example — implementing community-based projects, developing policy, research, monitoring and evaluation of projects. If there is additional information that you would like us to know to better understand you and your professional interests, include that content in answer #4.
• Note on Goal Statements in ASL and English: In your online application, you will submit a written personal statement answering four questions and submit a link to an American Sign Language (ASL) video where you discuss the same four questions. This is an opportunity to demonstrate the way that you approach the four questions in each language. The ASL and English Goal Statement do not need to be identical, and can address similar or different content areas.

• Applicants seeking advanced standing admission must hold a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) degree from a program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). In addition, they must submit:

The support must be formally committed by either an external sponsoring agency or a Gallaudet faculty member through a funded project or the graduate program. Acceptable evidence includes an external award or support letter (e.g., NSF, NIH, Fulbright, Vocational Rehabilitation or other agencies) or official assistantship, fellowship or traineeship offer letter. The documentation must specify the funding source, period of support, and level of financial commitment.
• A proctored essay in both American Sign Language (ASL) and English. These essays will be reviewed by the admissions committee to assess language proficiency. Based on the review, the committee may require admitted applicants to enroll in appropriate ASL and/or English courses during their first year (Y1), with interpreter support provided only in Y1 as needed. 
  • Your ASL essay and English essay will be completed during the same proctored session. Contact the Graduate Admissions Office to schedule a session with a graduate admissions counselor.

• 18 hours of Undergraduate Psychology courses preferred; Required undergraduate coursework includes the following or equivalent coursework: Child Development, Adult Development or Lifespan Development; Psychopathology or Abnormal Psychology; Experimental Psychology or Research Methods; and Statistics
• List all psychology courses you have taken. Create and upload a separate list that includes all course titles, number of credit hours, and grades for each course. Then, calculate your grade point average (GPA) using the following scale: A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, F=0. (Multiply each grade by credit hours to find your psychology GPA.)
• Prior research and/or professional/volunteer experiences preferred
• Three Letters of Reference from academic, clinical and/or research professors or supervisors who can write to readiness for doctoral study. An additional fourth letter may be submitted from an individual who can attest to the applicant’s knowledge or experiences of working with deaf, hard of hearing, deafblind, deaf disabled, or late deafened individuals; ASL or other communication modalities; and/or cultural experiences. However, this fourth letter is optional and not required of applicants. Please inform your writers that the program requires an in-depth letter of recommendation that is uploaded in the admissions portal. They should not use the template recommendation form from the Admissions Office.
• Three Narrative Statements - Please answer each of the following prompts using a minimum of 3 pages per question, typed, double-spaced and 11 or 12-point font size.
  • Narrative 1. Discuss your reasons for pursuing a doctoral degree in clinical psychology. Additionally, what do you envision your career to look like subsequent to receiving your Clinical Psychology PhD degree at Gallaudet University?
  • Narrative 2. What are your current interests in and qualifications for pursuing specialized doctoral level training in working with deaf and hard of hearing individuals, their families, and communities?
  • Narrative 3. Discuss two specific research topics that you are interested in pursuing if you join the Gallaudet University Clinical Psychology PhD Program. Please also identify one to two core faculty members in the Clinical Psychology PhD Program who you believe will support you in achieving your research goals. Discuss why these faculty will potentially be a good fit with your scholarly goals and interests.
  • NOTE: The three narrative summaries described above substitute for the Graduate Admission’s “Goals Statement”. You do not need to complete the Graduate Admission’s “Goals Statement” when applying to the Clinical Psychology PhD Program.
• Scholarly Writing Sample
  • The Clinical Psychology PhD Program and the work of health service psychologists require a high degree of professional and scholarly writing skills. To help us in evaluating this area, each applicant is asked to submit a copy (non-returnable) of a scholarly work in psychology or a related field. This can be a print or pre-print of an authored article, Honor’s/Capstones research projects, MA thesis projects, or academic papers written for junior and senior level psychology coursework for example. Case reports, treatment plans, and related clinical products should not be submitted as part of the application.

• Virtual Interview by invitation in February. Applicants may visit the campus at any time during the application and decision-making process.

Optional Components for Ph.D. Applicants

All information must be submitted to the Graduate School Admissions Office and received by December 1. Students are admitted for fall matriculation only. Program faculty review all written material in December. Finalists are generally contacted in January to schedule interviews. Students selected for the program are notified of their status as soon as admissions decisions are made. If a selected student declines or withdraws from consideration, then another finalist may be selected from the waiting list.
