Requirements

  • Completed application form. See Application Instructions to learn how.
  • A non-refundable application fee of $75.
  • Official transcripts of all graduate study. See Application Guidelines and FAQ for more information.
  • All international applicants from non-English speaking countries must demonstrate English language competence via the Degrees of Reading Power (DRP) examination. TOEFL results may be substituted instead of taking the DRP. (Use 5240 for the ETS institutional code)

Additional Program Requirements

For Gallaudet M.A. Linguistics students/graduates only:

  1. Letter of interest, including a description of dissertation research topic and question and identification of a faculty member who you would like to have as your dissertation advisor and who you have discussed your topic and question with and who has agreed to consider being your advisor.
  2. CV – Including academic background, relevant extracurricular activities such as participation in linguistics conferences, student or faculty research projects, linguistics teaching, receipt of awards or research grants.
  3. Graduate-level paper, in either American Sign Language (ASL) or English that exemplifies your work
  4. LIN Viva exam score (contact the current LIN program coordinator if you can’t find your Viva notification letter)
  5. Successful completion of the GU M.A. Linguistics program
  6. Official transcripts of all graduate study
  7. ASLPI result of 3+ or higher

For applicants not in or graduated from Gallaudet M.A. Linguistics program only:

  1. Letter of interest, including a description of dissertation research topic/question and identification of a faculty member who you would like as your dissertation advisor. NOTE: you must meet with that faculty member to discuss your research topic and confirm that they agree to serve as your advisor BEFORE you list them in your letter of interest.
  2. CV – Including academic background, relevant extracurricular activities such as participation in linguistics conferences, student or faculty research projects, linguistics teaching, receipt of awards or research grants.
  3. Successful completion of an M.A. degree
  4. Graduate-level paper in English that demonstrates your ability to present complex information at the graduate level.
  5. Official transcripts of all graduate study
  6. Three letters of recommendation that comment on your preparedness for graduate studies in linguistics; at least two should be from academic sources (i.e. your course instructors)
  7. Goals Statement in ASL (https://youtu.be/pntB6omta7Y)
  8. ASLPI result of 3+ or higher
