Translation Lab offers guidance for students tackling challenging projects

Klijah Mitchell stares at his laptop like a detective trying to crack a case. The senior in the Interpretation and Translation program is watching a video of Evon J. Black, '87 & G-'96, Associate Director of the Center for Black Deaf Studies (CBDS), introducing an interview. His job is to turn her signs into a written English transcript that will be archived along with the video at the D.C. Public Library.

Education professor researched bilingual teaching strategies in Mexico as a U.S. Fulbright Scholar

Dr. Maribel Gárate-Estes, a professor of Education at Gallaudet University, spent the fall 2023 semester in Mexico researching bilingual teaching strategies to allocate a signed and a written/spoken language with deaf students. She also collaborated with the Department of Education (Secretaría de Educación Pública) and the Instituto Pedagógico para Problemas del Lenguaje (I.A.P.) on curriculum and program development to benefit current and future teachers of deaf-signing students.

Professor wins mentoring award for encouraging students to study computing

Dr. Raja Kushalnagar, director of the B.S. in Information Technology and M.S. in Accessible Human-Centered Computing programs, has been recognized by the Computing Research Association (CRA) for his efforts to steer students into careers studying computing. He will receive the 2024 Undergraduate Research Faculty Mentoring Award at a national computing conference later this year.
