Health Insurance

Students studying abroad are required to maintain the Gallaudet student health insurance plan for the duration of their program, unless they have an approved waiver demonstrating equivalent coverage. This requirement ensures compliance with institutional health insurance policies and host institution requirements.

Registration Status

Students remain registered as full-time students while abroad, thereby maintaining their student status. The only exception is students who are abroad during the summer; in those cases, their subsequent status will depend on whether they graduate or return and enroll full-time in the fall.

Student Fees

Most standard student fees (Student Activities, Technology, and Health Service Fees) continue to apply, including the health insurance fee. The Health Services fee is not waived for students participating in education abroad programs. Because most programs are short in duration—except for IDMA interns—students are generally required to maintain coverage for both pre-departure and post-return periods.
